Job Description: We are looking for a caring, dedicated oncologist to join our team. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of nursing care for all types of Oncology patients in the Radiation Oncology department through the use of the nursing process identified by the Facility's professional nursing practice plan.


  • A. Demonstrates customer service to others as a number one priority and accomplishes this by integrating Service Excellence into all aspects of the work day, taking responsibility for service recovery and working for outcomes that delight the customer.

  • B. Assesses patients and identifies physical, spiritual, nutritional and psychosocial needs for patients requiring all levels of care with a focus on the patient with complex needs.

  • C. Identifies and manages common side effects associated with cancer treatment and evaluates patient/family response to nursing interventions. Acts as a resource for the nursing process to other clinical nurses.

  • D. Provides or facilitates learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family by assessing the learning needs and formulating and initiating a teaching plan to meet those needs. Collaborates with the patient and family to identify complex teaching needs. Functions as a resource for department staff.

  • E. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team to achieve desired patient care outcomes. Makes appropriate referrals based on patient assessment. Maintains awareness/knowledge of community services, agencies, and resources.

  • F. Assists the physician/mid-level provider in patient care activities, i.e., consultation, examination, clinic day, follow-ups, etc. Prepares exam rooms for patient use, assesses supply needs and orders appropriately.

  • G. Triages patient phone calls and assesses for level of care needed, referring to physicians or providing nursing intervention as assessment indicates.

  • H. Provides direct nursing care and procedures within scope of practice.

  • I. Maintains accountability for nursing care by identifying, reporting and resolving patient problems.

  • J. Prepares for and participates in the weekly patient care conference. Relays pertinent patient information and documents patient related discussions.

  • K. Participates in activities that promote better patient care, nursing development and professional growth, i.e. educational programs and in-services specific to the patient population served.

  • L. Promotes and maintains positive working relationships in a collegial manner with co-workers, medical staff and personnel of other departments and demonstrates effective communication skills. Assists others needing help as necessary and displays flexibility in job responsibilities.

  • M. Participates in achieving the department budget by managing own work hours, flexing and staffing to volumes, keeping OT to a minimum, utilizing supplies appropriately and by continually applying process improvement techniques to eliminate waste in work flows

  • N. Participates in the application of process excellence and in the department’s Culture of Safety/Engagement Action Plan.

  • O. Attends and participates in department staff and committee meetings. Participates in peer evaluations and self -evaluation and goal setting.

  • P. Float to other areas within the Cancer Center to support Nursing Staff.

  • Q. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.

  • R. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.

  • S. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.

  • T. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors.

  • U. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.

  • V. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.


  • AA Degree in Nursing or Graduate of a professional nursing program is required.

  • Preferred ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate Course. If candidate does not have certification must obtain after working in Radiation Oncology for 2 years. Renew certificate every 2 3 years thereafter by successfully completing the ONS "ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate."Radiation Renewal" course.


  • 1. Demonstrated competence in a health care setting for a minimum of 2 years is preferred.

  • 2. Demonstrated competence in oncology nursing at least 1 year is required.


  • Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa is required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.

  • Must be Fully vaccinated for COVID-19
